CLOSED CITY

According to UNESCO there are 98 indigenous languages in Russia, which are at risk of disappearing within the next 50 years. The project “Immortal Natives” was launched to learn, preserve and teach these languages using A.I. Originally a small film project, I took the opportunity to photograph a few of the remaining people of the ancient tribe Nganasan of the Taymyr Peninsula in Northern Siberia. In this non-commissioned photo series they appear in traditional clothing set against their industrialised habitat. Only a handful of them still herd reindeer, which used to be their main source of food and income.
